Freiburg
Freiburg is situated at the foot of the Black Forest and in the immediate vicinity of France and Switzerland. Tradition and modernity, culture and nature are all pleasantly combined in this lively, cosmopolitan, university city. There is an exceptional number of leisure, sports and recreation activities to choose from. There is also a wide range of cultural activities on offer, with plenty of theatres, concerts, museums and exhibitions to choose from.
The city´s most famous landmark is the cathedral, a marvel of medieval architecture whose unique, 116 m high tower is one of the masterpieces of European gothic architecture and is what makes Freiburg´s silhouette so distinctive. It took over 300 years to build the
cathedral, which was completed in 1513. Around the cathedral lies the charming, picturesque old town with its colourful market and architectural treasures, which include two medieval city gates, an old and a new town hall, the Historisches Kaufhaus (historic merchants´ hall), the Kornhaus and the Erzbischöfliches Palais (Archbishop´s Palace). The famous Bächle, the little rivulets that flow through the streets and alleyways, enrich the cityscape in an inimitable way. In very close proximity to the old town lies the Schlossberg, which offers wonderful views of the city.
